Any way to display details by default in ALL folders regardless of the type? I just wish MS would take care of my pet peeve regarding Explorer folder defaults. My default is Details view, however, the file name column is never sized big enough to display the entire file name. I wish MS would include a setting to autofit one or more or all columns in details view. Once that header is the desired size, release the mouse. Repeat for the other headers; the boundary for the last rightmost header is near the right-hand edge of the window.
Right click on a folder, go in Properties, select Customize, in Customize this folder for, select General Items it defaults to Images if the folder contains images. Then click Apply this template to all subfolders if you have image subfolders. Your solution can work for an entire drive, provided you do it from the root folder, e. At least that is what I found in Windows 7. The steps have to be tweaked a bit. Unfortunately, sometimes a genuine.
JPG but before the. Good article! Thanks for this info, but what is the equivalent for a Flash Drive. I keep a copy of my Personal documents in folders on my home and work computers and on my Flash Drive in a folder called Home. At home in Windows 7 I snap-fit the My Documents folder next to the Flash Drive folder to update the contents of the Home sub-folders, and they both open in Details view.
Why this inconsistency?? Definitely worth a look. Is there a way to default order by date modified? Icing on the cake…. You can set the view to Details View as explained in the article. Then click on the Date Modified in the title bar and it will sort your folder by date until you change it again. You can toggle switch the order from latest to earliest and vice versa by clicking again on the Date Modified in the title bar. You can then change the view back to anything you like.
Very happy to hear that Win Explorer has a rational name now of File Explorer. BTW, I run Win 7 and have a gripe about expanding folders. You then have to scroll down again to where you were the folders are all still expanded.
I have had this computer for two days and was ready to throw it off down the hill. All my documents were either showing with details or as large icons. Hi there; is there anybody that can tell or show me how to change the bitrate in all folder and on my hdd, ive massive collection of music, but i cant seem to change that,, i wanna try change the mayor folder so it apply to all sub folders too,, Thank you kindly, been fighting with this almost 2 months now,,,.
There are, however, third-party programs that will convert music files from one type or bitrate to another. For example, you might try:. You can, however, download and use it on a trial basis. Why would anyone WANT to hide file extensions? If checking this option increases risk of getting hacked, why is this set as default?
Any ideas? It worked. Until they do, we have to make our own tools. I developed a tool a Powershell script with a user-friendly HTA interface to globally set Explorer folder views. One of the first things I do any time I get ahold of another computer is turn it off. Recently I developed a batch file that will fix it not only for the current user, but for ALL users, including. My batch file has been growing over the past few months as I find more things to add to it, but in the interest of brevity I will include only the parts relevant to this topic.
Feel free to add your favorite additional tweaks. CaLL :modkey. REM Add your user-specific tweaks here. The question of how make explorer default to showing details for all folders of any type is never answered.
Others have the same issue. Can you help? Generally speaking you can set 1 folder to view with the 'Large Icons' setting, and then tell File Explorer that you want all folders to look the same.
You can test your changes by viewing other folders on the C drive to see if they all look the same. If you've followed the steps above but would then like at least one or two folders to look different than your main view, then simply follow the same steps above, omitting Steps 4 through 6. If you are setting the view as Large Icons and you intend to view thumbnails instead of icon placeholders which won't show you a picture preview , then you will also want to ensure that your PC Performance Settings allows for thumbnail views.

I can't promise I'll respond to all the messages I receive depending on the volume , but I'll do my best. About the author: Dennis Faas is the owner and operator of Infopackets. Click the View tab, the look at near the very top for the heading "Folder Views". Click the button that says "Apply to folders". This will set all your folders to open under the same view you just set in Step 3.
Why it matters? Its a double edged sword. Microsoft picked up the idea to have a class or "type" of document inside a folder would be what that folder was used for, and then they created this way to apply a default view selection to all folders deemed to contain content "of type".
The problem is where you have people like me.. Them to start or default to "Details", and yes I want my last view of that specific folder to be saved in what ever way I last viewed said folder, so the "remember folder view" in previous versions of windows would be selected this option now missing for me in windows I don't want to go into a folder of my MP3's and see "mp3" related tags, or "duration" or any of that crap..
And that's because plugging your phone in, and viewing its files.. To see what I'm talking about.. Here you'll see folders like "Desktop" "Documents" "Downloads" more and one will be named "Pictures". You can do this by clicking the Change your view button in the horizontal blue bar at the top of the window, then choosing your desired view.
In the image below, I have chosen the Details option. Windows 7 includes a special Folders menu that contains most of the options that you will need to access when you want to make changes to the ways that folders and files are displayed. You can access this folder from any Windows Explorer window by clicking the Organize button in the horizontal blue bar at the top of the window. This will expand an additional set of choices, so click the Folder and Search Options item.
You will notice that there are three tabs at the top of the window — General , View and Search. The adjustments we want to make are located on the View tab, so click that to show the options contained on that menu.
At the top of this menu you will see a large Apply to folders button.
